My school
My school is a three-storeyed building. It is quite big with a sport ground behind it.
On the ground floor there are classrooms for the primary-school pupils, workshops. There are all kinds of tools and machines in the workshops. The boys of our school have a woodwork room too.
There is a room for manual works for girls. Teachers teach them how to cook, sew and design clothes. Our school library is nice and clean. Two librarians help pupils to find books they need. There are many bookcases and bookshelves with a lot of books there.
If you enter the school and turn left you see a big light dining-room. It is always busy and noisy, but it is clean. Here pupils and their teachers have their lunch. There are blue curtains on the windows and beautiful pictures on the walls.
There is a gymnasium on the ground floor as well. Our physical training lessons are held there. Pupils like to go there even after the lessons, because it has a lot of sport equipment. Our school has many classrooms. The classrooms are light and spacious. There are three large windows in each classroom with flower pots on the window sills.
Each room has teacher's table, pupils desks, blackboard, tables and charts on the wall, maps and portraits. There are special classrooms for Chemistry, Physics, Biology, History, Geography, English, and Russian. On the first floor there is a big nice assemble hall. A lot of meetings, concerts, festivals are held there.
Our classroom is on the second floor. Its windows face the school-yard. Our form-mistress is a teacher of Russian language and literature. We respect her very much, she is a kind and knowledgeable teacher. She teaches us Russian and is so fond of her subject, that each of us cannot help liking too.
When I think about my school I don't remember its walls and desks; it is my teachers and school-mates who will be always with me. I am so thankful to our teachers for what they have done for us.
There is a good tradition in our school. Every year people who graduated our school come here to meet their teachers and classmates. These meetings take place every first Saturday of February.

My School

The school where I study is situated not far from my house. It's a modem three-storeyed building of a typical design. In front of the school there is a big sportsground, behind it there is a small garden with beautiful flower beds. Here on the sportsground pupils have their classes in physical training when the weather is fine.
When you enter the school you'll see a large gymnasium, work-shops and a canteen on the left. On the right there is a Headmaster's office. The cloak-room is downstairs. The classrooms, the laboratories. the doctor's office, the library, the Teacher's room are on the upper floors. There is a large hall on the first floor and schoolchildren hold their meetings here.
We are proud of our physics, chemistry, botany and English labs. They are equipped with tape recorders, TV sets and other necessary apparatus.
During the years of study we acquire deep knowledge in various subjects, such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, Russian and foreign languages and literature, history, geography etc. I was especially good at languages. Our teacher gave us basic knowledge of these sciences, they taught us to treat nature carefully, to love our Motherland, to be honest and hardworking.

I like my school very much.

There were also lots of shells.            She  helped her brother to clean the beach. She found a little shinny pebble for her collection.

And what is your hobby? Please write to me soon, Ted.

My best friend is Alex. He’s 12. I’ve known Alex since my first day at school. Alex is not very tall. He’s got a funny , sun-tanned face with green eyes and some freckles. His hair is short and curly.
He’s amusing, but sometimes he is shy. He’s also very active and enjoy doing sports. He’s not a couch-potato and I like him.
Alex’s favourite hobby is playing football. We often play together. We like going to the cinema together but sometimes can’t agree on what film to see.

I’m very talkative and get on well with people. I’m not a couch-potato. I like to spend my free time with friends. I never fall out and I am always there for my friends. I’m amusing, but sometimes can be shy. I’m also very active and enjoy doing sports.

I like history. I think it is very interesting to know some facts about our past. People who study the past are called archaeologists. I think archaeologists are like detectives: they look for things from the past and then try to understand what happened a long time ago.
I’d like to tell you some facts from Ancient Egypt. People in Ancient Egypt used to believe in a magic animal that had a man’s head and a lion’s body- Sphinx. The Sphinx was built 4500 years ago. It was a stone monument 20 metres high. Egypt is also known for it’s huge stone pyramids. Pyramids are known as one of the 7 wonders of the world. Pharaohs were sometimes buried inside these pyramids. One of the youngest pharaohs in Ancient Egypt was Tutankhamen. He became king at the age of 12 and died at the age of 18.
Archaeologists in Belarus also have to work hard and carefully to know all facts from our past. They gave us such names as Fransisk Skarina, Efrasinya Polotskaya, Radziwills, The Black Lady and others.

Here the past and present are brought together. It is one of the centres of cultural life in Belarus.

14.My English class.
I like (don’t like) English. I started learning English at school, 4 years ago. I was able to say the English alphabet when I was 10, read and write - at the age of 12.
This year I have 3 English classes a week. I think I can speak (a little)  English now. In my opinion I will be able to speak English really well in 2 years.
We usually have a lot of things to do at our English class. We have to attend our classes first of all. We write compositions, do tests, read aloud, translate, learn grammar rules, use a dictionary, take part in quiz shows, do projects, ask and answer questions in English, write exercises, etc.
My brother always helps me with my English homework and sometimes I use the Internet.
Actually, English is my favourite subject.

Music is my life

I love music, I think people can not live without it. The first thing I do in the morning I switch on my tape — recorder.
We can hear music everywhere: in the streets, in the shops, on TV, over the radio, in the cars, in the parks, everywhere. I think it's really doesn't matter what kind of music you prefer: rock, pop, classical, jazz. A lot of people are fond of music. They buy tapes, go to the concerts, visit Concert Halls and Opera Theatres.
I enjoy listening to music because it reflects my moods and emotions. Very often when I'm blue, I play my favourite merry songs and feel much better.
Sometimes I attend music halls and the concerts, when popular groups and singers are there. I like watching music programmes on TV. I like to know more and more about popular talented groups and singers I like.
One wall of my room is covered with posters of "Bon Jovi", "Scorpions", "Roxette", Russian singers Agutin, Sjutkin, Linda and others. Some people go to musics schools, they play different musical instruments, sing in the chorus, try to compose music.
Unfortunately there are so many ungifted singers on the stages, that it makes me sad.
To have a good producer doesn't mean to have good ears and voice. I think that only talented people can claim to be singers.

I like to walk here. There is a nice Ice Palace and two stadiums in Lida. I think my town is famous not only for its beauty but for its hospitable and hard - working people. Our people are friendly. I love my town very much.

My Everyday Meals

I usually have two or three meals a day on weekdays and four meals on my day off. I don't often have an opportunity to have a dinner when I'm at school. My meals are breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper or tea.
Some of my friends have a snack rather than a meal in the morning. But my breakfast is a full meal and I have it at 7 o'clock. It is usually bacon and eggs. Afterwards come sandwiches with butter and cheese or sausages, or sometimes jam. Then I drink tea or coffee.
I have lunch at about 12 o'clock. It starts with fruit juice. Then I have a vegetable salad and sandwiches again or pies with tea.
Dinner is at three or four o'clock. For dinner I have soup or borsch for starter, and meat or fish with a lot of vegetables for main course. For dessert I often have stewed fruit or jelly.

And at last supper. It is at seven or eight. My mother usually cooks fried fish and mashed potatoes, beefsteak and omelette. And salads, of course. Then I prefer a glass of warm milk with biscuits. Sometimes before going to bed I drink orange juice or eat an apple.

MEALS IN BRITAIN

Breakfast time is between 7 and 9 a.m. A traditional English breakfast is bacon and eggs, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, orange juice, toast and a cup of tea.People have lunch between 12 a.m. and 2 p.m.Schoolchildren usually have lunch in the canteen. Somechildren take a "packed lunch" from home. This is often a sandwich, some crisps, some fruit and a drink.
In the evening families get together and have dinner. It is usually between 6 and 8 p.m. A traditional English dinner is meat and vegetables. One of  the vegetables is often potatoes. Many people also like pasta and rice. Tea is Britain's favourite drink. People usually drink tea with milk. They can have tea with sandwiches, cakes or biscuits. On December 25th families have a traditional Christmas dinner. They cook a lot of food, but they always have roast turkey, vegetables and Christmas pudding for Christmas dinner.

Great Britain
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. They lie to the north-west of Europe. The British Isles are separated from the continent by the narrow strait of water which is called the English Channel.
The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, the central part, occupies the most of the island of Great Britain. To the north lies Scotland and to the west the third part of the country, Wales, is situated. The fourth part is called Northern Ireland and is located on the second island. Each part has its capital. The capital of England is London, Wales has Cardiff, Scotland has Edinburgh and the main city of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
Great Britain is a country of forests and plains. There are no high mountains in this country. Scotland is the most mountainous region with the highest peak, Ben Nevis. The rivers of Great Britain are not long. The longest rivers are the Thames and the Severn. The capital of the United Kingdom, London, stands on the banks of the Thames. As the country is surrounded by many seas there are some great ports at the seaside: London, Glasgow, Plymouth and others.
Wales is a country of lakes.
Seas and oceans influence the British climate which is not too cold in winter but never hot in summer. Great Britain is a beautiful country with old traditions and good people.

Appearance and character

Beauty may have fair leaves, but bitter fruit. As I see it, this is about appearances and characters.
To my mind appearances sometimes may be deceptive, but not always. Of course, practically everyone has met at least someone whose character and appearance differ radically. And still we are captivated by stereotypes. When we watch films we expect positive heroes to be tall, well-built and handsome, with bright eyes, a straight nose, high forehead, and thick brown hair. They are supposed to be brave, strong-willed and confident in character. Positive heroines should be beautiful slender young ladies with delicate features, blue eyes under thick eyelashes, plump lips and long blonde, or at least fair, wavy hair.
Negative characters should be weak and small, with pale eyes and thin or balding hair, with an ugly face. Wicked cinema females are practically always skinny brunettes with ugly irregular features – a hooked nose, a pointed chin, close-set eyes and thin lips. They display their character as cunning and hypocritical.
In ordinary life intelligent, kind, generous and cheerful people do not necessarily have good looks. Similarly, stupid, stubborn, stingy (жадный), impolite and harsh (жёсткий, неприятный) people are not necessarily unattractive. Nature likes to play tricks on us, and we may consider it as a present on the part of nature. Life becomes not a boring routine, but a brilliant kaleidoscope of characters and appearances which often clash.

Shopping

When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, a bookshop, chemists, a newsagents, a sweet shop, a toy shop, a bakery, the women’s clothing department,a food supermarket.
I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell varios goods under one roof and this is very convenient. You can buy everything you like there.
In the women’s clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men’s clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties etc.
In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, cereals, tea. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits.
The methods of shopping may vary. It may be a selfservice shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. If it is not a self-service shop, and most small shops are not, the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants.

Education in Great Britain

In Britain it is compulsory for everyone between the ages of 5 and 16 years to receive some officially recognized form of schooling, though most secondary schools continue to provide education until the age of 18.The vast majority of pupils attend state schools, which are absolutely free (including all text books and exercise books), but there are also about 500 private schools providing secondary education. The most famous of these schools are Eton and Harrow. There is no statutory age at which students change from primary to secondary school, nor are schools "specialized" — pupils choose from the numerous subjects taught in their particular school. The recently introduced National Curriculum has made it compulsory, however, for three core subjects — English, mathematics, and science — and seven other foundation subjects — technology (including design), history, geography, music, art, physical education, and a modern foreign language — to be included in the curricula of all pupils.Passage from one academic year to the next is automatic. After a two-year course, usually from 14 to 16 years of age, most pupils take their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), assessed on the basis of a mixture of course work and a written examination, in individual subjects.Pupils obtaining at least five passes at GCSE can then specialize for two years (usually from 16 to 18 years of age) in two or three subjects, in which they take the General Certificate of Education Advanced level (A-level) examination. This is used as an entrance qualification for university (minimum two passes) and other types of higher education, as well as for many forms of professional training.

Television
Television nowadays has become one of the most important mass media.  It informs, educates and entertains people. It influences the way people look at the world and makes them change their views. In other words, mass media, and especially television, mould public opinion.
Millions of people like to watch TV in their spare time.  The TV set now is not just a piece of furniture. It is someone who is one of the families. There are two viewpoints on television.  Some people think that television is doing a lot of harm.  People begin to forget how to occupy their free time.  It prevents them from communicating with each other, from visiting friends, or relatives. And indeed, people used to have hobbies, they used to go outside for amusements to the theatres, cinemas, sporting events. They used to read books and listen to music.  Now all free time is given to television.
But there are a lot of people who consider TV to be helpful because it gives us a lot of information.  We become better informed by watching documentaries, science programs and by learning the most important economic, social and political issues of the day. We can see famous people, great events that will pass into history.Television gives wonderful possibilities for education: you can take a TV course in history, economy, in learning foreign languages and in many other subjects.
Television brings the world in your living-rooms. We see people in our country and in other lands, and learn their customs, occupations, and problems. TV gives us opportunities to see the best actors and performances, to hear the latest news, to listen to political discussions. To crown it all, TV simply helps us to relax after a hard day's work, giving a great variety of entertaining and musical programs.

Still, it's not a good thing for children to be glued to the TV screen all day long.  It's very harmful for their health and for developing personalities, because children prefer low-standard hits, horror films or banal serials.  All this by no means contributes to what we call making a personality.

Summer Holidays

All the people enjoy summer holidays very much. It is a great pleasure to have a rest after a whole year of hard work or study. People like to travel during their summer holidays. Some people go abroad to see new countries, some people prefer to go to the country-side to enjoy country-life far from noise and fuss of big cities.
Some people like to spend their holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseeing. But a great number of people go to the seaside in summer.
I like to have rest at the seaside best of all. I do not like crowds when I am on holiday. My family and I always have our holiday on the coast. Sea and sunshine, that is what we look forward to every summer. Hotels at the large seaside towns are rather expensive, so we usually go to a holiday camp.
Last year we spent our holidays in such a camp. Each day was full of small joys. We swam in the sea, lay in the sun, played different games and had a wonderful time. We lived there for about a month and did not even notice when the time came for us to return home. The time flew very quickly. It was a wonderful rest.

                                          My household chores

Doing household chores is a necessary part of our life. People all over the world try to work hard. They usually have a lot of duties. I have a lot of duties, too. My parents are often tired and I must take care of them. Everybody is happy when the home is always bright and clean. Day after day I can have fun when I do my household chores. I sweep the floor, tidy my room, clean the shoes, dust the furniture, make food myself and do every kind of work. It's not easy to do every kind of work at home, but I can learn to do everything myself. When I do my household chores well, everybody in the family is happy. If I have a holiday party at home, I can help my mother and grandmother a lot. How happy mother is to see everything bright! It's a nice present for my parents to tidy the house! It's wonderful to make people happy! If I have time, my mother asks me to go to the shop. I go there and buy bread, eggs and sugar. Very often I go to the market with my mother. We buy some vegetables and fruits. Then I help my mother to carry them. My mother cooks well; sometimes I help her when she makes cakes. She usually makes them before holidays and on my birthday. We have got a country house. There is a big garden with many trees, bushes and flowers in it. There is a lot of work in our garden and I help my parents to do it. We must do our household chores, because if we hadn't done it our flat would look like a trash can. I usually clean my flat on Friday. First of all I clean with duster table, piano, some boxes, TV, lamp and many other things. At second I clean with vacuum cleaner carpet in my room, then I clean carpet in mother's and father's room. I usually wash the floor in all rooms. Then I wash bath-shell with "Pemolux". Later I wash stove with "Fairy". Every day I must feed my cat. It is very big and fat. I cook a fish soup I to it. After supper I always wash plates and dishes. Sometimes I cook myself, but my cookies up aren't so nice as mother's. I think I make an impact in tiding our place. It is necessary to help the parents. Try to make people happy and you will be happy yourself
